General Patient Information

For all medical emergencies, call 911.

Our regular office hours are 8:00am - 4:30pm, Monday through Thursday and 7:00am - 1:45pm on Fridays. After hours, one of our providers is on call. Please call our office to speak with our nurse triage line. Remember that antibiotics and pain medications are NOT called in after hours and be sure to have your pharmacy's phone number handy when you call.

We accept most insurance plans and as a courtesy, file insurance claims for you. Please be aware that your co-pay or deductible is due at the time of service. It is your responsibility to inform us of changes with your insurance plan. Although we file claims for you, you are still responsible for your bill, regardless of the amount your insurance pays, except in cases of pre-negotiated insurance agreements and where legally prohibited.

If your insurance requires a referral for a specialist or prior approval for testing, our staff will make every effort to provide your insurance the necessary information.

If you do not have insurance, payment is expected at the time you receive services. A discount of 30% is given for cash paying patients.

Payment Policy Proof of Insurance

All patients must complete our patient information forms before seeing the provider. We must obtain a copy of your current, valid insurance card for proof of insurance. If you fail to provide us with the correct insurance information at the time of service, you may be responsible for the balance of your claim.

CoPayments & Balances Due

All copayments and balance dues must be paid at the time of service. This arrangement is part of your contract with your insurance company. Failure on our part to collect copayments from patients can be considered fraud. Please help us in upholding the law by paying your copayment at each visit.

Claim Submission

We will submit your claims to your insurance provider and assist you in any way we reasonably can to help get your claims paid. Your insurance company may need you to supply certain information directly. It is your responsibility to comply with their request. Please be aware that the balance of your claim is your responsibility whether or not your insurance company pays your claim. Your insurance benefit is a contract between you and your insurance company; we are not a party to that contract.

Monthly Billing Statement

After your insurance company pays Brio Internal Medicine, you will receive a monthly billing statement, which indicates your balance due and/or deductible due. These amounts are payable to Brio Internal Medicine. The balance due is payable in full within 10 days of receipt of the monthly billing statement. If you have questions about your account please call 864.603.5600.

Insurance

We participate in most insurance plans. If you are not insured by a plan we do business with or do not have insurance, payment in full is expected at each visit. If you are insured by a plan we do business with but do not have an up-to-date insurance card, payment in full for each visit is required until we can verify your coverage. Brio Internal Medicine will file to your primary and secondary insurance.

Coverage Change

If your insurance changes, please notify us before your next visit so we can make the appropriate changes to help you receive your maximum benefits. If we cannot verify active coverage, the balance will automatically be billed to you.

Secondary Insurance

Supplemental or secondary health insurance is another policy that serves to "wrap around" your primary health care policy. When you are sick, your primary insurer picks up the majority of your medical expenses and is billed by your provider. If you have secondary insurance, your provider may then submit these charges to the secondary insurance for additional payment. While your secondary insurance may not cover all of your out-of-pocket costs, it can help cover large expenses in many cases.

Self-Pay

Any patient who is self-pay is responsible for paying in full at the time of service for any scheduled appointment.

Non-Payment

Partial payments will not be accepted unless otherwise negotiated with the billing department. Please be aware that if a balance remains unpaid, we may refer your account to a collection agency and you may be discharged from this practice. You will be responsible for any collection or legal cost associated with collecting your account. If this is to occur, you will be notified that you have 30 days to find alternative medical care. During that 30 day period, our providers will only be able to treat you on an emergency basis.

Missed Appointments

In order to achieve the best appointment availability for our patients, we have a policy for missed appointments. There will be a $15 charge added to the account for the first missed appointment, a $25 fee for the second, and a $35 fee for the third. Three missed appointments within a 12 month period will result in eligibility for discharge from the practice for the family. We understand the potential for unforeseen circumstances that can arise that may cause a late arrival or missed appointment. If this happens, please call us as soon as possible so we can change your appointment status accordingly and make it available for another patient. If the first New Patient Appointment is missed, the individual will no longer be eligible to stay with Brio as a patient of the practice.

Cancellations

Our policy is to charge $25 for previously scheduled appointments that are cancelled less than 24 hours prior to their scheduled time/date. These charges will be your responsibility and billed directly to you, not your insurance company. Please help us serve you better by keeping your regular scheduled appointments.

Non-Covered Services

Please be aware that some - and perhaps all - of the services you receive may be non-covered or not considered reasonable or necessary by your insurance company. Since all insurance plans are different, please contact your insurance company or HR department for detailed information about what is covered or not covered including annual physical maximums, immunizations, etc. You will be billed and responsible for all non-covered services.

To better understand your personal health benefits, use our Understanding My Current Benefits Worksheet. To obtain the information, call your insurance company (their phone number is on the back of the insurance card) and ask them to send you a summary of benefits for your (or your child's) current plan.

Forms of Payment

Brio Internal Medicine accepts payments by cash, check, money orders, Visa, MasterCard, and debit cards bearing these logos. Payment is expected at the time of service.

Please remember to bring in your current prescription bottles to every visit. Established patients please update your medication list in our Patient Portal prior to your visit and bring a copy in with you.

Brio is providing a new electronic medical record and billing system that utilizes a tool called a Patient Portal. The Patient Portal allows you to see key parts of your medical record, communicate with your care team, and participate in your care like never before.

Frequently Asked Questions

You do not need to fast for lab work unless specified by your provider.

Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Physicians are all medically trained professionals. Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners can see patients for the majority of the same issues as a Physician. Our Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners work closely with our Physicians in order to provide our patients with the best medical care.

There are medical risks associated with prescribing medications. Some medications require monitoring. Your provider feels it is in your best interest to have face to face time with you in order to assess your needs before writing another prescription.

The Controlled Substance Policy is designed to keep our office up to date with DHEC regulations. All patients are given the policy to review and sign. The goal of this policy is to ensure our patients' safety.

It is our goal to schedule each patient with their primary care provider. If a patient's provider is out of the office or the provider's schedule is filled, we want to provide our patients with the best availability and may offer another provider. All of our providers work closely together to provide seamless care for our patients.

Patients may access the portal via hyperlink provided in an email that is sent once the patient is web enabled. The portal also has a Healow app that patients can download on their smartphones.

The patient portal may be used to request an appointment, request medication refills, view health records, and to view lab reports.

A new patient appointment is not considered a physical. The new patient appointment allows your provider to assess your previous medical history, along with current needs, in order to build a foundation to continue your medical care.

The major difference between a physician assistant and physician is the physicians work independently, while physician assistants work closely with the physicians in order to provide the best care.

The AWV is an "Annual Wellness Visit." This visit allows patients to complete the suggested Medicare questionnaire along with lab work prior to their visit with their provider. It does not include a hands-on exam. This allows the provider an opportunity to provide a plan for preventative care for the patient at their follow up visit.

We are so happy you have chosen Brio Internal Medicine, and we would like to deliver to you the highest quality of medical care possible. In order for us to do that, we ask that you first schedule an office visit to establish your care here. At the first appointment, the provider will gather from you a detailed medical history so that they know how best to treat you moving forward. The provider may order some lab test at this appointment, and go over results with you at your second appointment. The second appointment will be your yearly physical or preventative visit. Not only will the provider go over any lab work ordered, they will also perform a full physical exam and address any questions or concerns that you may have.

The first appointment will be an office visit (non-preventative) to establish care. This enables the provider to gather as much medical history as possible so that they can better treat you moving forward.

Sometimes when you come to Brio for a preventative visit, the provider will also code an office visit if there are any problems that the provider addressed with you in addition to your preventative visit. Your copay is applied to this office visit.

Statements are printed and mailed out the last week of each month.

We would be happy to file your medical claims to your insurance, however, each benefit plan is different. The best way to find out what benefits you have would be to call your insurance company.

Although we will draw your labs at our office, we do not have a fully functioning lab yet. In order to run the appropriate tests, we may need to send your labs offsite to LabCorp. We are currently working on growing our lab resources so that we can keep your labs "in house" as much as possible.

Absolutely! Don't panic and leave the practice yet. We are still trying to negotiate with UHC and are hopeful we will work something out. If you would like to call your insurance representative to voice your concerns, this will help us expedite an agreement. We will send more information in the coming months as we know more.

If you do not have any insurance coverage, we can still see you at Brio Internal Medicine! You will be given a 20% discount on all charges and all monies will be due at the time of service. Depending on the complexity of your visit, it could be as much as $75.00 - $210.00 for only the office visit. Any labs or other procedures would be in addition to that amount.

Yes, you can! You will need to let one of our representatives know that you would like us to web enable an account for you. You will receive an email with a web address along with your temporary log in password. Once you log in to your portal online, you will be instructed to update your password. After completing the account setup process you can access a plethora of information regarding your healthcare. From here, you will be able to request medication refills, non-urgent appointments, send a message directly to your doctor, and MORE! Not all the features have been made accessible yet, but we are working very hard to make those available to you just as soon as possible.

Your health insurance policy is a contract between you and your health insurance company. It is an agreement requiring your health insurance company to pay for covered medical care as long as you pay your portion of the policy. The health insurance company may not pay for every service you received. It is important for you to understand the specifics of your coverage, as you are responsible for paying any medical costs that the health insurance company does not pay for.

The part of your medical bill you must pay at the time of service. This is a pre-set fee determined by your health insurance policy.

The part of your bill, in addition to a co-pay, that you must pay. Co-insurance is usually a percentage of the total medical bill - for example, a plan with 80/20 coinsurance would require you to pay 20%. Co-insurance frequently begins once a deductible has been met.

The amount of money you must pay before your health insurance company starts to pay - for example, $500 per individual or $1,500 per family. In most cases, a new deductible must be satisfied each calendar year. It is important to ask your insurance provider what services count towards your deductible (e.g. prescriptions, well visits, labs, etc.)

Cost for treatment that your health insurance company does not pay. You may wish to determine if your treatment is covered by your health insurance policy before your appointment.

Secondary insurance is any insurance that could serve as a "back up" if the primary insurance does not cover certain things. Brio accepts secondary insurance!

A Health Savings Account allows you to set aside pre-taxed earnings until you need it for qualified medical expenses.

A Flexible Spending Account allows you to set aside pre-taxed earnings (normally from your paycheck) for qualified expenses (e.g. medical, childcare, etc.) that occur in the same year.

While you are responsible for the cost of your care, your doctor's office will make every effort to seek payment from your health insurance company for the amount owed under your policy. Because of this, doctor's offices encourage you to provide thorough and timely patient and policy information.

Many health insurance companies require you to fill out a form that tells the company whether you or a family member have other health insurance. Your health insurance company needs this information to work with other insurers to determine which company pays for what services. It is important that you fill out this form and return it to the health insurance company or call them directly to give them this information. Otherwise, your medical bills may not get paid or payment may be delayed.

This is your explanation of benefits that you receive from your insurance plan that explains what portion of your visit was covered by your benefits and what you may owe to your provider. Please refer to your EOB when reviewing your visit details.

We ask that you allow 24-48 hours for Prior Authorizations to be submitted and 72 hours for your insurance company to okay the request as long as no additional information is needed.

Join Our Brio Family!

Becoming a patient

The providers and staff at Brio Internal Medicine are excited to have you as a new patient. We look forward to providing you with the highest quality compassionate care that you will find in the Upstate. At Brio, we consider it a privilege to partner with you and work together to meet your healthcare needs. We are also passionate about preventative care and want to provide both the highest quality disease management and also take the time to work with you to prevent future problems down the road.

What to Expect on your First Visit

The typical new patient visit is a consultation in which your new provider will take the time to get to know you personally as well as your medical issues. Devoting this extra time at your initial visit allows us to gain a solid foundation of your health information that will result in us providing you with the highest quality care. After your initial consultation, we will together determine when labwork, additional testing, and/or a physical are needed.

Be sure to arrive 15 minutes early to your scheduled appointment to get checked in and complete any necessary paperwork prior to your appointment time.

Our New Patient Registration Packet is now available for you to download and complete at your convenience, prior to your appointment. The following patients should complete this packet:

  • If you have not seen an internist before: Please download our New Patient Registration Packet, complete it, and bring the paperwork along with your driver's license and insurance card to your first visit.
  • If you are transferring from another practice: In order to facilitate the transfer of records, please mail or drop off the registration paperwork to our office at your earliest convenience. We will need this information and records before scheduling any visits.

Beyond the First Visit

Brio has three main types of visits:

Sick Visit

You have a sinus infection, the flu, etc. and need to be seen as soon as possible.

Maintenance Visit

This is a regularly scheduled appointment to monitor ongoing conditions like diabetes, ADHD, weight or stress management, and so on.

Annual Preventative Visit

This is a proactive and preventative appointment to spend time with your Brio provider to look at your overall health and wellness. During this visit, we will focus on things like your long term weight and fitness goals, certain risk factors for conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, other things like bone health, cancer screenings, and disease protection (vaccines).

It is extremely important to us as your medical home to take time each year to step back from our ongoing treatment and care plans and look at your overall health.
